Brecke Latham Boyd is a principled professional with digital media, policy communications and global PR experience working in both the public and private sectors. She is based in Washington, D.C., and currently serves as Strategic Communications for Lockheed Martin Government Affairs.
For Brecke, working in media relations presents the incredible opportunity to inform and educate the public on issues affecting their community, state, and country. As a student of journalism, she deeply respects that the press is a vital piece of democracy. The more informed a society, the healthier democracy is within that society. Therefore, throughout her career, Brecke Latham Boyd has prided herself on maintaining an open dialogue with news outlets and working with reporters to build trust through factual storytelling. Her strong reputation is a direct consequence of her eagerness and dedication to tell stories with utmost sincerity and integrity.
Now, more than ever, journalist and citizens alike must be more critical of where they get their information. Brecke has come to witness firsthand just how prevalent and damaging the circulation of misinformation is and can be.
The use of social media, which can drive web traffic to these sources, has served to amplify its effect. Inaccurate online reporting tends to utilize eye-catching headlines, or “clickbait,” and fabricated stories to increase readership and online sharing. While real, authentic news aims to inform and educate readers, fake news seeks to mislead readers for financial, or political gain.
Brecke Latham Boyd hopes to bring more attention to this issue by promoting sound practices of Media Literacy. Studies have demonstrated students and young adults especially are the key demographic consumers targeted for false online information. Brecke is on a mission not only to help more people identify when something is true, but also to empower media consumers to actively fight against its spread.
